The Horary Oracle

Ask exactly one focused question. The engine will erect a chart for your location at this exact moment, then judge it using mathematical pre-1700s techniques — translation, collection, prohibition, and mutual reception.

For mathematical accuracy, the chart must be erected for where you are right now.

What Is Horary Astrology?

The oldest question-answering technique in Western astrology.

Horary astrology is a branch of traditional astrology that answers a specific question by erecting a chart for the exact moment the question is sincerely asked. Unlike natal astrology — which maps your entire life from birth — horary focuses on one question, one moment, one answer.

The method was perfected by William Lilly in his 1647 masterwork Christian Astrology, though its roots trace back to the Arabic astrologers of the 8th–10th centuries (Masha'allah, Sahl ibn Bishr) and ultimately to the Hellenistic tradition. It remains the most empirically testable branch of astrology — you ask, the chart answers, and life confirms or denies.

How the Oracle Works

Three mathematical steps. No guessing.

1

Erect the Chart

A Regiomontanus chart is cast for the exact moment you submit your question and your current geographic coordinates. Real ephemeris data — the same Swiss Ephemeris used by professional astrologers.

2

Identify Significators

The Querent (you) is represented by the 1st house ruler. The Quesited (what you're asking about) is assigned to its natural house — 7th for relationships, 10th for career, 2nd for money, and so on. The Moon always co-signifies the Querent.

3

Judge Perfection

The engine checks whether the significators are applying to aspect, translating light, collecting light, or being prohibited. It scores each condition mathematically and delivers a weighted verdict: Yes, No, or Uncertain.

Key Horary Principles

The classical rules that govern every judgment.

✦ Significators

The Lord of the Ascendant represents you. The Lord of the relevant house represents what you're asking about. Aspects between them — or not — determine the outcome.

✦ Perfection

If the significators are applying to a major aspect (conjunction, sextile, trine, square, opposition), the matter "perfects" — meaning the answer tends toward Yes. No applying aspect means No.

✦ Translation of Light

A faster planet can carry the light from one significator to the other, acting as a go-between or intermediary. This is a classical mechanism for things coming together through a third party.

✦ Prohibition

When a third planet aspects one of the significators before they can perfect, it "prohibits" — blocks — the outcome. Something or someone interferes.

✦ Strictures Against Judgment

Certain chart conditions — early Ascendant, late Ascendant, Saturn in the 7th, void-of-course Moon — indicate the chart may not be fit for judgment. The engine checks and reports these transparently.

✦ Regiomontanus Houses

Classical horary uses Regiomontanus house division, not whole sign. This was the standard for Lilly and the Renaissance horary tradition. House cusps are calculated from real astronomical data.

What Can You Ask?

Horary works best with clear, focused, yes-or-no questions about concrete situations.

"Will I get the job I interviewed for?"
"Should I move to this new city?"
"Will the business deal close?"
"Where are my lost keys?"
"Will I hear back from them?"
"Is this the right time to invest?"

Frequently Asked Questions

What is horary astrology?

Horary astrology is a branch of traditional astrology that answers a specific question by erecting a chart for the exact moment the question is asked. It uses strict classical rules from William Lilly, Bonatti, and the Arabic tradition to deliver a concrete answer — not a personality reading, but a direct judgment about your question.

Do I need my birth time for horary?

No. Horary has nothing to do with your natal chart. The chart is erected for the moment you ask the question. You only need your current city so the engine can calculate precise house cusps and planetary positions for your location right now.

Why only 5 questions per month?

Classical tradition holds that a genuine horary question arises from real concern — you shouldn't ask the same question repeatedly or test the system with idle curiosity. The limit helps maintain the integrity of the practice and keeps the engine responsive for all users.

What are strictures against judgment?

Strictures are chart conditions that indicate the question may not be answerable at this time — for example, if the Ascendant is in the first or last 3° of a sign, if Saturn afflicts the 7th house, or if the Moon is void of course. When strictures appear, the engine reports them honestly. The answer may still be given, but with a warning.

Is this AI-generated?

The planetary positions, house cusps, and aspect calculations are 100% deterministic — computed from real astronomical data (Swiss Ephemeris). The judgment logic follows documented classical rules. AI is not used to generate the verdict. Every claim is auditable against the calculation data.

What house system does horary use?

Classical horary astrology uses Regiomontanus house division, not whole sign houses. This was the standard for William Lilly and the Renaissance horary tradition. Our engine enforces Regiomontanus automatically for all horary charts.
