The Hyleg & Alcocoden

The Medieval Calculus of Life Force

HISTORICAL CONTEXT ONLY

This tool performs a calculation used by 12th-century astrologers (Bonatti, Valens) to estimate vitality and potential lifespan. It is not a medical diagnosis. It is a historical analysis of the "Qi" or life-force in the chart.

In the hierarchy of the chart, two planets hold the keys to physical existence:

  • The Hyleg (Giver of Life): The planet or point that represents the physical body and its resilience.
  • The Alcocoden (Giver of Years): The planet that "rules" the Hyleg and grants it time.

The Methodology

This engine uses the Bonatti Method. We scan the "Aphetic Places" (1st, 10th, 11th, 7th, 9th Houses) for the Sun (Day) or Moon (Night). If the Luminaries are not in these power zones, we look to the Ascendant, the Part of Fortune, or the Syzygy.

Once the Hyleg is found, we look for its Alcocoden: the planet that has the most dignity in that degree and aspects the Hyleg. This relationship determines the "Vitality Rating."
