The Hyleg & Alcocoden

The traditional method for studying vitality symbolism in a birth chart.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT ONLY

This tool performs a calculation used by medieval astrologers (Bonatti, Valens) to discuss vitality symbolism in historical texts. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, or lifespan prediction. Do not use it for health, safety, emergency, or psychological decisions.

In the hierarchy of the chart, two planets were used as symbolic markers in medieval vitality doctrine:

  • The Hyleg (Giver of Life): The planet or point traditionally used to symbolize embodiment and resilience.
  • The Alcocoden (Giver of Years): The planet that "rules" the Hyleg in the traditional doctrine; this site does not calculate or predict lifespan.

The Methodology

This engine uses the Bonatti Method. We scan the "Aphetic Places" (1st, 10th, 11th, 7th, 9th Houses) for the Sun (Day) or Moon (Night). If the Luminaries are not in these power zones, we look to the Ascendant, the Part of Fortune, or the Syzygy.

Once the Hyleg is found, we look for its Alcocoden: the planet that has the most dignity in that degree and aspects the Hyleg. The relationship between the two tells you about the chart's constitutional strength.
