Planetary Dignities Explained — Domicile, Exaltation, Detriment, and Fall
June 2026 · 10 min read
Quick Answer
Planetary dignities measure how strong or weak a planet is based on which zodiac sign it occupies. The five essential dignities are domicile (strongest), exaltation (very strong), triplicity (moderate), term (minor), and face (minor). The debilities are detriment and fall.
In modern astrology, a planet in Scorpio is described by the traits of Scorpio, and that's mostly where the analysis stops. In traditional astrology, the sign a planet occupies is evaluated against a system of strengths and weaknesses — what the tradition calls dignities and debilities. A planet in its own sign operates differently than a planet in an enemy's sign, and a skilled reader distinguishes between them at every step.
Understanding dignities is the single biggest upgrade you can make when reading a traditional chart.
Domicile — the planet in its own sign
Domicile (also called rulership or "in its own sign") is the strongest essential dignity. A planet in domicile occupies one of the signs it rules. It's on home turf: it knows the territory, sets the rules, and can operate at full capacity. It does not have to defer to another planet.
| Planet | Domicile Signs |
|---|---|
| Sun | Leo |
| Moon | Cancer |
| Mercury | Gemini, Virgo |
| Venus | Taurus, Libra |
| Mars | Aries, Scorpio |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius, Pisces |
| Saturn | Capricorn, Aquarius |
A planet in domicile delivers its significations more reliably. A domicile Venus in the 7th house reads as a planet that genuinely strengthens partnership symbolism. Contrast with Venus in Aries or Scorpio (detriment), where the partnership symbolism exists but operates under friction.
Exaltation — honored, but a guest
Exaltation is the second-strongest dignity. Each planet has one sign of exaltation — a place where it is treated with special honor, like a visiting dignitary. The planet is strong, but it doesn't own the house. Some classical authors described exalted planets as powerful but prone to overreach, performing well in formal contexts but less integrated than a domicile planet.
| Planet | Exaltation Sign | Exaltation Degree |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aries | 19° |
| Moon | Taurus | 3° |
| Mercury | Virgo | 15° |
| Venus | Pisces | 27° |
| Mars | Capricorn | 28° |
| Jupiter | Cancer | 15° |
| Saturn | Libra | 21° |
When a planet falls within a few degrees of its exact exaltation degree, it is considered even more strongly placed. Jupiter at 15° Cancer, for example, is at peak exaltation — deeply honored, fully expressed.
Triplicity — moderate dignity by element
Triplicity is a moderate dignity based on the four elements (fire, earth, air, water). Each element has three signs, and each triplicity has planetary rulers that differ between day charts and night charts — which is where sect (day chart vs. night chart) matters.
| Element / Signs | Day Ruler | Night Ruler | Participating Ruler |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire (Aries, Leo, Sgr) | Sun | Jupiter | Saturn |
| Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Cap) | Venus | Moon | Mars |
| Air (Gemini, Libra, Aqu) | Saturn | Mercury | Jupiter |
| Water (Cancer, Sco, Pisces) | Venus | Mars | Moon |
A planet in its triplicity has a friendly, moderate dignity — enough to function well, not enough to lead the chart. Triplicity rulers are particularly important in Hellenistic timing work (zodiacal releasing), where they help determine the tone of different life phases.
Term and Face — minor dignities
Term (also called "bound") divides each sign into five unequal sections, each governed by a planet. A planet in its own term has a minor dignity — enough to slightly strengthen its condition but rarely enough to overcome major debilities.
Face (also called decan) divides each sign into three 10° sections. Each face has a planetary ruler in a rotating sequence. Face is the weakest of the five dignities. Classical authors compared a planet in its own face to a person standing at their own door — still on familiar ground, but barely.
In practice, beginning readers should focus on domicile and exaltation. Triplicity becomes important in Hellenistic timing techniques. Term and face are supporting details that advanced readers use to tiebreak or add nuance.
Detriment — opposite domicile
A planet in detriment occupies the sign directly opposite one of its domicile signs. The Sun rules Leo, so the Sun in Aquarius is in detriment. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, so Mars in Taurus or Libra is in detriment.
| Planet | Detriment Signs |
|---|---|
| Sun | Aquarius |
| Moon | Capricorn |
| Mercury | Sagittarius, Pisces |
| Venus | Aries, Scorpio |
| Mars | Taurus, Libra |
| Jupiter | Gemini, Virgo |
| Saturn | Cancer, Leo |
A planet in detriment is not broken — it can still function. But it operates in territory governed by an opposite planet, one that symbolizes values and approaches different from its own. Mars in Libra (detriment) still acts like Mars, but it's operating in Venus's sign. The result is often Mars energy that hesitates, negotiates, or softens in ways that feel mismatched with Mars's nature.
Fall — opposite exaltation
Fall is the sign directly opposite a planet's exaltation. Saturn is exalted in Libra, so Saturn in Aries is in fall. The Moon is exalted in Taurus, so the Moon in Scorpio is in fall.
| Planet | Fall Sign |
|---|---|
| Sun | Libra |
| Moon | Scorpio |
| Mercury | Pisces |
| Venus | Virgo |
| Mars | Cancer |
| Jupiter | Capricorn |
| Saturn | Aries |
A planet in fall tends to express its significations uncertainly or with difficulty. Classical authors described it as like a once-honored guest who has been disgraced. The planet is present, but its confidence and effectiveness are reduced. Unlike detriment (which is an operational mismatch), fall tends to produce instability or self-undermining in the planet's expression.
How to use dignities in chart reading
The practical application is straightforward: before interpreting any planet, check its essential dignity.
- Domicile or exaltation: the planet is strong. Expect reliable, clear expression of its significations in the houses it rules and occupies.
- Triplicity: moderate. The planet functions with some ease but is not at peak capacity.
- No dignity (peregrine): the planet is wandering in unfamiliar territory. It can express itself, but without a home-field advantage.
- Detriment: operational friction. The planet expresses itself but awkwardly, in ways that may work against its natural symbolism.
- Fall: instability or self-defeating expression. The significations of the planet may be undermined or complicated.
Dignity does not tell you whether good or bad things will happen — that is determined by the overall chart picture. What dignity tells you is how effectively the planet can carry out its symbolic functions. A strong planet in a difficult house is still strong. A weak planet in a "good" house may not deliver what the house promises.

What does it mean for a planet to be in domicile?
A planet in domicile occupies one of the two signs it rules. It operates at full capacity, without needing to negotiate with another planet's significations. Mars in Aries, Venus in Taurus, Saturn in Capricorn — these planets are home.
Is exaltation stronger than domicile?
No — domicile is considered the stronger of the two in most traditional systems. An exalted planet is honored and expressive, but it's a guest. A domicile planet is the host. The exception in some classical texts is when the exaltation degree falls very close to the natal planet's exact degree, which is read as particularly powerful.
Can a planet in detriment or fall still be beneficial?
Yes. A debilitated planet in a good house, receiving benefic aspects, and otherwise well-configured can still produce positive outcomes — it just works harder for them. Debility is a weakness in essential condition, not a prediction of harm. Context always overrides any single placement.
Do modern planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) have dignities?
Not in traditional astrology. The dignity system was built for the seven classical planets visible to the naked eye: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Traditional astrology does not assign rulerships or dignities to Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto, which were unknown to classical authors.
